Ignition and Car Key Issues. What to watch out for and how to fix.

Is getting more difficult to access or start your vehicle? If you have ever had trouble getting in your vehicle or had to spend a few minutes jiggling your ignition to get started, you know exactly how frustrating it can be.

When these issues occur you need a solution fast. Our cold Chicago winters are not to be trifled with! Getting caught in the cold with a car that won’t start could be life threatening for you and your loved ones.

So what do you do if your car key starts acting up?

Is it the key?

First you have to determine if it’s the key that is the problem. Does the key look worn, damaged, or bent?  Is there any visible corrosion? If so, your key may need to be replaced. If you have a spare key, try the lock or ignition with it, do you still have a problem? If you don’t have a spare, you could have one made by your preferred locksmith.

Is it your ignition or locks?

If you think it’s your ignition or locks, one way to confirm is to try different doors on the car. If they all don’t work, it’s likely it’s the key, if some work and some don’t, then it’s likely the troublesome locks themselves.

There are many reasons that locks and ignitions wear and break down. However, if there is an issue, it is best to simply replace the affected part.
