As always, if you have a question or concern, please feel free to contact us.

Is your door strong?

If you have a weak door to begin with, nothing else matters. Somebody can easily gain access with a strong shoulder or kick. Solid doors work best. Also, when selecting a door, consider if windows in the door decrease the security of the door.

Strengthen the door jamb

The frame around the door is also a major consideration. They sell door frame reinforcement kits at many home improvement stores. It is recommended to install these for the greatest levels of security.

The doors hardware

When installing the door, make sure to use high quality hinges and screws. The same goes for installing your knobs and lock latch plates.

Knob and Deadbolts

Did you know that American National Standards Institute (ANSI) established three grades of security level for locks? It can be used to understand the strength and durability of any lock sold. We recommend grade 1 for entry doors, so that your family is always as secure as possible.

American National Standards Institute (ANSI)

Grade 1 – Best

Knobs must withstand 800,000 cycles, 6 door strikes and a 360 pound weight test

Deadbolts must withstand 250,000 cycles and 10 door strikes (hammer test)

Grade 2

Knobs must withstand 400,000 cycles, 4 door strikes and a 250 pound weight test

Deadbolts must withstand 150,000 cycles and 5 door strikes (hammer test)

Grade 3

Knobs must withstand 200,000 cycles, 2 door strikes and a 150 pound weight test

Deadbolts must withstand 100,000 cycles and 2 door strikes (hammer test)

Secondary deadbolt for exterior

I you want to feel extra secure when in your home, it might be a good idea to get a secondary deadbolt that locks from the inside only. These make it much more difficult for someone to gain entry and can add significant peace of mind.
